Mutual Funds - Buy From a Broker or From an Investment Fund Company?

What are the benefits of buying mutual funds from a broker versus an investment fund company? I understand many discount brokerage firms now offer the option of buying mutual fund shares directly from the brokerage. Doesn't this level the playing field for firms versus direct purchase?
