Online Investing

I am a very private person and like to be in control of my own life. This includes my financial life. I want to get involved with online investing and stock trading. Mostly, I'd like to do this so that I can be in control of my assets. At the same time, however, I don't want to lose my assets. So I am being very careful.

What are some important factors that people should consider before getting involved in online investing? What are some safe sites?

Are there any specific hint or tips you can give someone new to this? Maybe a good book that covers this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
